Synthetic Calcium Aluminates (E598): What It Is and Is It Safe?
Moderate
Anti-Caking Agent · Anti-caking agent
Synthetic calcium aluminates are aluminium-containing compounds used as anti-caking agents in powdered foods. Aluminium is slowly absorbed and accumulates in bone and nervous tissue; EFSA set a tolerable weekly intake of 1 mg aluminium per kg body weight in 2008, based on effects on the nervous and reproductive systems in animals, and concluded that a significant part of the population may exceed it. Aluminium-containing additives such as this one add to that cumulative intake where they are used.
