Vermiculite is a naturally occurring hydrated magnesium-aluminium-iron silicate mineral used as an anti-caking agent and as a carrier for other additives. The mineral is insoluble and passes through the digestive tract largely unabsorbed, and food-grade material is processed to be free of asbestiform fibres. It is regarded as inert at the levels used in food.
